The IEGT is active in curricular and extra-curricular teaching of both, students at Rostock University Medical School and at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Rostock University. The lectures, seminars and practical courses are customized for medical students (state examination), students of Medical Biotechnology (B.Sc. und M.Sc.) or Microbiology and Biochemistry (M.Sc). Study contents are designed to convey knowledge and competences in molecular medicine, cancer research, molecular virology, and the principles of gene therapeutic approaches as well as didactics in life sciences. A good part of our lectures and courses are held in English. Advanced students are granted the opportunity to perform academic work to obtain the degree as a Bachelor or a Master of Science, a Medical Doctor (Dr. med.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. rer. nat.).

Moleculare Virology: Onkogenic viruses

Time and Location: Mo. 18:00-19.00, seminar room,BMFZ, Schillingallee 69
Semester: SS
Lecturers: Prof. B.M. Pützer
Description: What are oncogenes and anti-oncogenes? Which viruses can cause cancer in man? What are the differences between DNA- and RNA-tumor viruses? How do DNA- and RNA-viruses transform a cell? There are seven viruses known to cause cancer in humans. The group comprises several Human Papilloma Viruses (HPV), the Hepatitis B (HBV) and the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), theEpstein-Barr Virus (EBV), the Human Herpesvirus 8 / Kaposi Sarkom-assoziierte Virus (HHV8/KSHV), the Humane T-lymphotrope Virus I (HTLV-I and -II) and the Merkel Cell Carcinoma Virus (MCPyV). This seminar deals with the mechanisms with which these viruses promote cancer onset. Further, the classification, transmission, diagnostics of HPV and the role of individual HPSs in pre-malign leasions of the cervix, the cervical carcinoma and the penile carcinoma are carved out. Finally, the epidemiology of HTLV-I and -II is reiterated as well as these viruses’ role in the emergence of the Adult T-cell lymphoma
